It demanded a six-month suspension of the "dangerous race" to create systems stronger than OpenAI's recently released GPT-4.

The letter advises governments to step in and impose a moratorium if such a stop can't be rapidly implemented.

The letter recommends that "AI laboratories and independent experts take this pause to collaboratively define and execute a set of shared safety rules for advanced AI design and development that are carefully verified and overseen by independent outside experts."

The systems conforming to these protocols "shall ensure that they are safe beyond a reasonable doubt."
